Ceremony is a basic instinct that has been following us throughout the ages. Ancient cultures dating as far back as 70,000 years ago used the power of ritual so that they could collectively heal and connect in a new way. From shamanic rites such as fertility dances and hunting ceremonies, to today’s baby showers, graduations and weddings, we have often used ritual to mark the milestones of our universal human experience.
Elizabeth Gilbert wrote: “Ceremony is essential to humans: It’s a circle that we draw around important events to separate the momentous from the ordinary. And ritual is a sort of magical safety harness that guides us from one stage of our lives into the next, making sure we don’t stumble or lose ourselves along the way.”
With rituals that mark rites of passage, there is a strong sense of before and after, that life has been touched by the experience and given deeper meaning.
A wedding ceremony is a magnificent rite of passage, honoring the partners’ past and the journey that led them to one another, taking them into their future as they begin a new path together.
